Credit Repair

CreditRepairHelp.org was created to help consumers better understand credit repair and take a more active role in improving their credit history. While there are many ways to hurt your credit, repairing the damage can be a long and painful process without help. So what is credit repair all about?

What Is Credit Repair?

Credit repair was made possible by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) in 1970 and is the process by which a consumer (or consumer advocate) may ensure the fairness, accuracy and privacy of personal information creditors report to credit bureaus. Under the provisions of the FRCA consumers may challenge information on his or her credit report under the principles of “completeness and accuracy.”

Once a challenge or dispute has been submitted, the credit bureau is required to complete an investigation within 30 days. Upon completion of the investigation, if the information “is found to be inaccurate or can no longer be verified, the [credit bureau] shall promptly delete such information.”

Disputes can be filed directly by the consumer according to published FTC guidelines, but creditors and debt collectors often make the process as difficult as possible since they may actually be benefitting (through higher interest rates) from the sloppy credit reporting. This is where a credit repair company can be of assistance.

How Can a Credit Repair Company Help?

Though you can dispute items yourself, keeping track of all the dispute letters and following up with all 3 credit bureaus can quickly become time consuming. Credit repair companies employ lawyers, paralegals and large support staffs to ensure the process is handled properly and no balls get dropped. Though the exact procedure may differ, most credit repair companies will follow these basic steps:

  • Obtain credit reports – With your permission, the company will acquire a copy of your credit report from all 3 major credit bureaus; TransUnion, Experian and Equifax.
  • Identify questionable items – After analyzing your credit reports the company will will work with you to identify items that may be inaccurate or erroneous.
  • Initiate the dispute process – The company will begin sending dispute letters directly to all 3 major credit bureaus questioning items identified above.
  • Report on progress – Since the FRCA requires credit bureaus to reply to a dispute within 30 day, credit repair companies will be able to report on successes rather quickly. They should also follow up with all outstanding disputes to ensure that only accurate information is on your credit report.

After a successful removal or correction, the credit bureau will send out a confirmation letter that informs you of what was changed on your credit report. A sample letter will look like this:

What Credit Repair Is NOT!

Credit repair is not an overnight fix to your credit problems. Each dispute can take up to 30 days and the effect of a removal may take time to reflect in each bureau’s credit score.

Credit repair will not make bad items disappear. You can’t remove negative items that are accurately documented and valid. You can only ensure that the information is accurate.
